The upper limit is the weir where the Nassington Backwater leaves the main river. The fishery includes the backwater but not continuous on both banks (see fishery map). The right bank of the main river from the upper limit down to one field below the bridge over the river. There is an additional short stretch of the right bank of the main river lower down but access an be quite difficult in the summer but could well be worth a look in wintertime when the bankside vegetation has died back.
The majority of members fish the backwater where there are extensive stocks of chub with the occasional barbel. It is hoped to develop this water as an additional barbel venue to compliment our others and to help this aim the Environment Agency stocked 250 barbel in December 2019 and we are hopeful of more stock arriving when they are available. In 2020 a habitat improvement scheme took place managing the water to provide additional cover and spawning sites as well as fencing the upper two fields preventing cattle damage to the bank.
The full range of river species are present especially in summer and include roach, dace, bream, perch, pike, gudgeon, eels and even the occasional wild brown trout. With about a mile of bank the backwater is a roving angler’s paradise and never crowded.
The main river sees only light angling activity and is an area with unexploited potential which could throw up some surprises including river carp and tench.
Members access the fishery via one of two locked gates for which keys are issued (deposit required) and have designated parking areas close to the river or backwater.
